I’m lucky. I have one baby through IUI who is now 16 months. He is healthy and sweet, and I love him dearly.
But, we want another so we are seeing my fertility doctor once again. We are extremely fortunate that we can afford the medication, physician’s fees, etc. Our insurance, while a good PPO through UHC, only covers blood work to my knowledge. After our first failed IUI, I decided to ask our agent to call UHC to confirm whether we have any sort of infertility benefits. Why be stupid, right?
Almost two weeks later, our agent says she is still waiting to hear back from UHC and will follow up. Almost three weeks from the initial inquiry, she emails saying, “your policy does not include in-vitro fertilization benefits.”
I didn’t ask specifically about IVF. I asked about general infertility. I went back to her and said to check about medications, IUI, etc.
It’s been yet another week and I’m still waiting to hear back.
Moral of the story is:
1. No one advocates or handles things the way you do when it’s your body or money, and
2. Infertility benefits should be covered by insurance for everyone.
